Bulgaria Marks World No Tobacco Day
This year the world day is under the motto “Smoke-free environments. Create and enjoy 100% smoke-free environment”.
In a smoking environment there are over 4000 chemical substances, some of which are toxic and cancerogenic. WHO research has shown that non-smokers who live with a smoker, the risk for lung cancer is with 20-30% higher.
The additional risk of smoke at the workplace is around 12-19%. The passive smoking is connected to pulmonary disorders, allergies, asthma and other respiratory diseases.
This year Bulgarian Health Ministry conducted a research on the future EU politics on smoking at public places.
Over 97% of the interviewed participants in an electronic questionnaire proclaimed themselves 'for' prohibition – complete or partial of the smoking at public places. Less than 3% are 'against' any kind of prohibition.
In Bulgarian national program for smoking restriction 2007-2010 is set smoking among Bulgarian population to be reduced with 10% compared to its rate in 2007 and to increase the year of beginning of smoking.
The present measures for prohibition of smoking at public and work-places and for preventive control in order to avert violations of the current legislation will continue to be effectively implemented.
