Bulgaria opened its first thermal power plant that works with biomass fuel on Wednesday in the country's ski resort Bansko.

The building of the plant was initiated by Bansko Municipality and Bul Eco Energia Company.

The thermal power plant has heating power of 10 MW and will use waste wood for fuel.

Only the first stage of the plant is now finished. An extension of the plant is planned for 2007.

The Austrian company Polytechnic, which is a leading producer in the area, has provided the equipment.
