Bulgaria Winter Resorts on Avalanche Alert 24/7
Bulgaria's winter resorts will introduce a twenty-four hour avalanche monitoring service to timely warn visitors of the threat.
This was decided Saturday at a meeting, organized by the mayor of Bansko, which recently suffered huge losses from an alleged avalanche-triggering bomb plot.
The service will be funded by the resorts' owners after the required amendments to local legislation are adopted.
Bulgaria has recently seen a number of reports about avalanches on the mountains as the weather warmed up.
Melting snow may be known to trigger avalanches, but the previous weekend the ski runs in Bansko were closed for nothing else but a fake bomb alert.
An environmental organization claimed to have planted an explosive device in a bid to set off an avalanche. They said to have set the bomb in protest at the unbridled and illegal construction works in the mountain resort.
No explosive device was found on Sunday and life in Bansko returned to its normal pace with the re-opening of the ski runs.
