Libyan Supreme Court Rules on Bulgarian Nurses Death Sentence
The hearing on the appeal of the death sentence of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor in front of Libya's Supreme court is scheduled for 20 June, reported BNR.
According to the defender of Bulgarian nurses Osman Bisanti on the first session, the judges will pronounce on the admissibility of the medics' appeal.
If the appeal of the death sentences is accepted, the case will have to be heard in substance. Bisanti added that the court will have a decision after maximum of 2-3 sessions.
According to the Libyan legislation the Supreme court can confirm the death sentences, pronounce sentences different from the death ones or overrule completely the current sentences, without returning the case for new hearing.
This means that whatever the decision of the Supreme court, it will be final and the possibility for using judicial arguments for the release of the Bulgarian nurses will be exhausted.
In case the death sentences are confirmed, there is possibility to plead to the Supreme judicial council of the Jamahirya for the nurses to be reprieved.
The fixing of the case for 20 June happens several days after European Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner and German foreign minister Frank Walter Steinmeier visited Libya. There they had talks with the nurses and the Palestinian doctor. The European officials met also with representatives of the families of the AIDS-contaminated children and with Muammar Gaddafi's son Seif al-Islam.
Last week, Seif al-Islam and the Idris Laga, chairman of the Association of the families from Benghazi made statements prognozing sooner solution of the continuing already eight years case with the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor.
